Kadence Tutorial Session 1
In this Kadence Tutorial session, we installed the Flywheel Local server on each participant’s computer; installed WordPress core; Kadence theme; Kadence Blocks and built a simple header and footer.
The purpose of the first session was to introduce the tools and to temporarily bypass many of the usual planning aspects of building a website so as to actually get some words and colors on to a page. The planning aspects will all be covered in the up-coming sessions.
To follow along with the session (as in the session video below), you may require access to these two resources:
- Ferdy Korpershoek’s YouTube video on installing and using Flywheel Local HERE
- Kadence Child theme HERE
Please feel free to add comments and ask questions in the Comments area below this post.
Session Video
The following video is a screen recording of the live session. Check out the features of the video player explained below to get the best experience of playing this video.
This video is also available on my YouTube channel.
Features of video player
The video is displayed in the Presto Player which has a number of very useful features which are accessed through the six icons in the lower right hand corner of the video frame.
- The first icon displays the chapters – time points embedded into the video. Click the icon to display the table. Select the desired chapter and click. The video will begin to play from that point.
- The second icon is a MUTE button.
- The third icon is a slider volume bar.
- The fourth “gear” icon is a setting selector. Clicking that icon allows you to select the required quality and speed. The video is produced and delivered in HD resolution (1080p) and can be played in full screen mode if the your internet bandwidth is sufficient.
- The fifth icon selects a Picture In Picture mode.
- The final icon selects full screen playback mode.
Looking for that child theme zip?
Hi George. The link for the Child theme is in the text just above the video – immediately under the link to the video about the Flywheel Local.
All the best,
Doug
Thanks Doug ( : I see the link now.
I have tried several times to use the Linux version of the Flywheel Local file to install WordPress on my Raspberry Pi 4B but kept getting unhelpful failure due to missing component messages, that referred to a report with no way of finding it. ?
I have resorted to a more manual method of resourcing a build environment for this platform. I have Apache2 , php and Mariadb all installed and functioning with WordPress 5.9…even got the Kadence theme in place on the Raspberry Pi 4B. But I’m concerned that without the “Local tools” that the rest of the group has access to, making my site secure and other procedures down the track are going to be more problematic.
That’s great, George. If you have WordPress, Kadence Theme and Kadence Blocks, you have pretty well everything you’ll need for anything we are doing …I think. I’m interested to see how the Pi goes.
Doug,
I have noticed a few differences in tool menus etc, while following through your video. I have some questions about the site health report section I came across. Generally though my Raspberry Pi now has a local hosting of the site we are building, set up and edited to the end of the first session. ( : However I’ve had an issue with the address for the wifi connection changed by the router ) : is this likely to reoccur when we try to use the library wifi for browser access as a group?
